Module 2: History of Drama
2.7. Drama and Cinema

Drama and film are two distinct but interrelated arts that can combine to create unique stories and expressive forms.

Drama and film are two of the most influential and popular art forms in the modern world. Their interaction and influence on each other led to the creation of new forms and unique works that reflect the spirit of the times and the needs of society.

On the one hand, drama is the basis for creating movies. It provides a script that provides a detailed description of the plot, characters, dialogs, and actions that take place in the movie. The playwright plays a key role in determining the style, atmosphere, and overall direction of the film.

However, cinema also has a significant influence on drama. Directors and actors can contribute their own ideas and interpretations to the script, which can lead to the creation of unique and innovative works. Moreover, cinematography allows viewers to see dramatic works in action, which makes them more accessible and attractive.

As a result of the synthesis of the arts, drama and film have created new art forms such as television series, documentaries, short films, and video games. These forms combine elements of drama, cinema and other forms of art, creating unique works that find their audience and have commercial success.

Synthesis methods:

1.       Screenplay and Screenwriting: Drama plays an important role in creating screenplays for films. A good script defines the structure, characters, and dialogue that will form the basis for a movie.

2.     Directing and acting skills: The director usually works with the playwright to visualize and reveal the ideas of the script. Actors embody the characters and give them life, turning the words of the script into real emotions and actions.

3.     Editing and Cinematography: Editing and cinematography allow you to create unique visual and audio-visual effects. They can increase the dramatic tension and emotional impact of the film.

4. Music and Sound: The audio track, including music, sound effects, and dialogs, plays an important role in movies. It emphasizes and enhances the dramatic atmosphere and emotions.

5.     Narrative Structure: Both arts work with a narrative structure, such as an act structure or dramatic conflict, to tell stories and convey ideas.

The synthesis of drama and cinema creates an opportunity for unique and creative expressions, as well as for the transmission of complex emotions and thoughts. This synthesis allows you to explore new forms and styles and supports diversity in the art of cinema.

If we talk about specifics regarding the theater, namely, when the synthesis of the play and filming took place, then the first TV shows appeared in the United States and Great Britain in the 1930s, when television broadcasting was just beginning to develop.

1.       USA: In the United States, the first public television performance was shown on April 30, 1939, at the New York World's Fair. This performance was called "The Streets of New York" and was a theatrical production.

2.     United Kingdom: In the United Kingdom, the first official TV play was broadcast on 2 November 1936 on the BBC. This performance was called "The Man with the Flower in His Mouth" and was based on the play of the same name.

These early TV shows were limited both in terms of technical capabilities and in terms of audience. However, they became the starting point for the development of television arts and performances, which in the following decades became an important part of cultural and entertainment content in many countries.

TV shows in the USSR began to appear in the mid-1950s. It was a new art form that combined elements of drama and film within a television format. Important stages in the development of TV shows in the USSR were:

1.       The birth of television: The first television stations in the USSR began broadcasting in the 1930s, but these were limited experimental programs. The development of television in the post-war decades provided the basis for future TV shows.

2.     Theatrical productions: Well-known theatrical productions, including classical works, have been adapted for television filming. This allowed a large audience to see many theatrical performances for the first time.

3.     Television dramas: In the 1960s and 1970s, special television drama works were created, which were developed taking into account the peculiarities of the television format.

4.    TV theater production: TV productions of theater performances have become more popular and accessible to the audience.

5.     Development of cinematographic techniques: With the development of cinematography in the USSR, cinematographic techniques, such as editing and camera, were used in TV shows to create more dynamic and interesting scenes.

TV shows in the USSR became an important means of cultural and educational impact, and also made it possible to expand the availability of art to a wide audience. This art form left a significant mark on the history of television art in the Soviet Union.
