6.2. The Internet and mental health

The Internet is a powerful tool that can both improve and harm your mental health. It is important to be aware of its influence and be able to interact correctly with the virtual world, observing moderation and taking care of your mental well-being.

• Anonymity

One of the main aspects of the internet that can affect our mental health is anonymity. Virtual anonymity can allow people to express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. This can be both a positive and a negative aspect. On the one hand, anonymity can facilitate frank discussions and interpersonal interactions. On the other hand, it can lead to aggression, haight, or negative effects on mental health.

• Social media

Social media is one of the most popular features of the internet. They allow us to keep in touch with our friends, share news and photos, participate in discussions, etc. However, constant comparison with others, fake ideals of beauty and happiness can lead to a decrease in self-esteem, depression and anxiety.

• Games and entertainment

The internet offers a huge amount of games and entertainment that can be attractive and exciting. However, too much time spent playing games can lead to addiction, decreased social activity, and problems in education and work.

• Information glut

The Internet offers a huge amount of information, which is much more convenient to access than in the usual way. However, being constantly in the flow of information can lead to oversaturation, difficulty learning and concentration, stress and anxiety.

The Internet offers huge opportunities for development and communication, but it is important to keep in mind its potential negative effects on mental health. In order to use all the possibilities of the Internet in a balanced way, it is necessary to pay attention to your emotions, be able to control your time and periodically take pauses, taking a break from the virtual world.
